The newest release from the underground vaults of Full Melt Recordings brings the world an eclectic collection of the psychedelic, meditative, experimental and ethnic flavors of international dubstep.
Brought out at a time when the current sound of dubstep seems to be splintering into either electro-tinged dance floor bangers or post- techno / new garage workouts, this compilation comes on like a breath of fresh air.
Starting out with Emu’s “Krishna Dub”, the listener is introduced to the beginning of their journey with a monk chanting “om”. Using this as the foundation of the entire track underpins the intent of the track and foreshadows the various winding paths the audience is about to embark upon.
With thick layers of instrumentation, including didgeridoo and live drumming, wAgAwAgA’s track is at times tender and sophisticated and at other times punchy and energetic. Overall he has crafted a tightly produced, psychedelically enhanced, organically sourced “dubstep” tune that will appeal to world music, dub, and electronica fans alike.
Hailing from Canada, Excision has been on the radar for many years. As the label head of Rottun Recordings, he has his finger on the pulse of the latest and greatest tracks of the dubstep scene. “That Girl”, his first track on Full Melt, is a bit of a departure for him. Instead of his trademark industrial strength beats, he turns inward and shows an emotional side for this release. Even with a dark and moody atmosphere looming overhead, a bit of sunshine cracks through the clouds and promises that although today may seem hard, tomorrow will be a bit better.
Pacheko is another veteran producer, hailing from Caracas, Venezuala. His track “Tricycle” utilizes a thought provoking vocal sample of someone reading text written by the Dali Lama. It says “To overcome detachment, we should concentrate on the ugliness which attracts us”. One of the more dancefloor friendly tracks on the compilation, this one lets some rainbow colored light into the mix, shining it straight up into the darkness, piercing the overcast clouds.
This CD is for late smoky nights, early Sunday mornings, long drives along the ocean and soul-searching hikes in the woods. A perfect way to start an evening & a perfect way to end one…
… Tune in, turn on, drop bass.
